Vasectomy Data Hidden: Access Denied to Men?
14 May
Summary
- Official NHS data omits thousands of vasectomies performed in primary care.
- Underfunding and service restrictions limit men's access to vasectomies.
- Incomplete data may lead to further service reductions, impacting reproductive choice.

Official statistics on vasectomies in England do not present a complete picture, according to Dr. Gareth James of the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care. NHS Digital figures exclude a significant number of procedures performed in community and primary care settings. In 2022-23, while NHS Digital recorded 10,710 vasectomies, members of the ASPC reported an additional 17,776 procedures in England. These figures remain outside national datasets despite repeated efforts for inclusion.
This exclusion poses a risk: if health service commissioners rely on incomplete data, they may reduce services based on a false assumption of declining demand. This creates a detrimental cycle of restricted access, longer waiting times, and decreased recorded activity. Ultimately, men may lose access to a safe, permanent contraceptive method, couples face reduced reproductive choices, and the responsibility for contraception continues to fall disproportionately on women. The situation raises questions about why NHS services are making vasectomy access difficult for men.
