7 Nov
Summary
- Health department advises immediate cool water for burns, no home remedies.
- People with chronic conditions should stay indoors during heavy smoke.
- Hospitals prepare for increased burn, injury, and respiratory cases.
The Varanasi district health department has issued a public health advisory for Diwali, emphasizing safe and responsible celebrations. Residents are cautioned against severe burns from firecrackers and diyas, advising immediate application of cool running water to affected areas for 10 to 20 minutes. Crucially, the advisory strongly discourages applying toothpaste, ghee, oil, turmeric, or ice to burns, and stresses covering wounds with a clean cloth. Any burns on the face, hands, feet, eyes, or large body areas require immediate medical attention.
Eye injuries from firecracker sparks necessitate avoiding rubbing or pressing the eye, and immediate consultation with an eye specialist. Harmful gases and fine particles from fireworks pose significant risks to the lungs and heart, especially for those with asthma, COPD, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, the elderly, pregnant women, and young children. These individuals should remain indoors during peak smoke and keep their prescribed medications accessible.
Symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness, cold sweating, dizziness, or unconsciousness should not be ignored, with emergency numbers 108 or 112 available for immediate assistance. Food safety is also addressed, with a reminder to cover sweets and refrigerate milk-based items. In case of gastrointestinal issues like nausea or diarrhea, ORS is recommended, with medical advice sought if symptoms worsen.
Hospitals are anticipating a surge in burn cases, traumatic injuries, eye injuries, and respiratory problems during Diwali. To manage this, uninterrupted emergency services, adequate medical resources, and proper fire safety arrangements are being ensured. Prohibiting firecrackers and open flames on hospital premises is a strict measure.
The health department implores residents to celebrate with joy, responsibility, and necessary precautions. Avoiding firecracker smoke, taking special care of vulnerable family members like children and the elderly, and seeking prompt medical help in emergencies are strongly urged.
