Vaping Saps Fitness: UK Study Reveals Shocking Impact
14 Jul
Summary
- Young adults who vape show similar fitness reductions as smokers.
- Vaping and smoking decrease exercise capacity by about 15%.
- Both activities cause increased breathlessness and leg fatigue.

New research from Manchester Metropolitan University indicates that vaping significantly impacts the fitness levels of young adults. The study, published in ERJ Open Research, found that individuals aged 18 to 30 who vape exhibit reduced exercise capacity and increased breathlessness, comparable to those who smoke.
Examining 75 participants, the study revealed that both vapers and smokers experienced approximately a 15% decrease in fitness and oxygen uptake. Blood vessel inflammation was also observed in both groups, suggesting similar physiological effects to smoking.
These findings underscore the potential health risks of vaping for young adults, who may not have a prior history of smoking. The results lend support to the U.K.'s Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026, which aims to restrict vaping among underage individuals.
