UK Woman Loses Bowel Over Vaginal Mesh Device
19 Jul
Summary
- Woman's pain dismissed until husband intervened.
- Vaginal mesh procedure led to severe pain and bowel removal.
- Wales lacks specialist services, unlike England's centers.

Donna Davies, a 56-year-old from Swansea, is set to have her large bowel removed due to complications from a vaginal mesh device fitted nearly two decades ago. The device caused her constant, severe pain, which she felt was not adequately believed by medical professionals until her husband corroborated her experience.
The procedure, intended to treat stress urinary incontinence, has since been paused by the NHS. Davies' case was discussed at a recent women's health summit in Wales, which aimed to tackle the issue of women's pain being routinely dismissed as normal within healthcare.
Davies expressed concern over the lack of specialist services for women with her condition in Wales, contrasting it with the nine specialist centres available in England. This disparity was a key point raised by Delyth Jewell, the Welsh women's health minister, who advocated for strengthened rules requiring health boards to involve women in service design.
The summit, attended by clinicians, researchers, and affected women, aims to maintain momentum for the Women's Health Plan, launched in December 2024. Minimum standards are being drafted to ensure women's voices influence the plan's delivery and future priorities, with ongoing efforts to gather feedback for improvements.
