Utah Kratom Deaths: Deadly Compounds Found in Supplements
7 Oct
Summary
- Potent kratom-derived compounds, MGPI and MGM-15, caused four deaths in Utah.
- These illegal compounds were found in herbal supplements mislabeled as 'cat's claw'.
- Health officials warn consumers and retailers about dangerous opioid derivatives.
Four individuals in Utah have tragically died due to potent, semi-synthetic kratom compounds, officials announced on Monday. These illegal substances, mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MGPI) and dihydro-7-hydroxymitragynine (MGM-15), have been classified as Schedule 1 drugs by the DEA.
Health and poison control experts revealed these dangerous compounds were detected in certain herbal supplements, including those falsely advertised as containing 'cat's claw.' Despite claims of legality and being kratom-free, these products were found to contain potent opioids derived from kratom, causing symptoms similar to opioid overdoses.
Retailers are urged to stop selling these products, and healthcare providers are alerted to the risks of addiction, withdrawal, and overdose associated with their use. Several other states, including Tennessee and Virginia, have issued similar warnings about deceptive 'cat's claw' products containing kratom-related compounds.
