16 Sep
Summary
- Over 50% of US adults experienced physical violence in their lifetime.
- Nearly half of US adults have experienced sexual violence.
- Violence is linked to youth, financial struggles, and substance use.
A significant portion of the U.S. adult population has experienced violence, with over 52% reporting physical violence and 49% reporting sexual violence in their lifetimes, according to the U.S. National Study on Violence Experiences Across the Lifespan (USVEX). The study, which surveyed 2,720 adults nationwide, indicates that violence is closely intertwined with factors such as youth, economic hardship, and substance use. This comprehensive data offers a more accurate reflection of violence in the United States than traditional crime reports. Intimate partner violence disproportionately affects women, with 61% experiencing it compared to 45% of men. The research also identified strong correlations between violence and financial struggles, including homelessness, and behavioral health issues like depression and anxiety. Researchers emphasize that violence prevention must extend beyond isolated measures to encompass broader strategies that address social inequalities, mental health, and economic stability. The findings suggest that younger individuals are at a greater risk, with nearly a third of young adults reporting sexual violence.
