US Senior Care Strained: Northeast Faces Highest Pressure
25 Apr
Summary
- Northeastern states face significant strain on senior care systems.
- Vermont ranks highest for elderly care pressure, with high costs.
- Southern and central states show better support for older residents.

As over 61 million Americans now exceed 65 years old, the accessibility of affordable healthcare and support services for seniors is becoming increasingly dependent on location. A new analysis by Opera Beds reveals stark disparities across states in their capacity to care for an aging population.
Northeastern states are experiencing the greatest pressure. Vermont leads with an elderly care pressure score of 8.36 out of 10, due to a large senior population and high costs for home health aides, approaching $100,000 annually. Maine also ranks high, with 21.9% of its residents over 65 and similar costly home care.
In contrast, southern and central states appear better equipped. Louisiana scored lowest with 1.58 out of 10, benefiting from significantly lower home care costs and more nursing homes per senior. Texas also performed well, partly due to a younger demographic, despite some older adults facing medical bill payment difficulties.
