US Reverses Policy Halting Foreign Doctor Visas
4 May
Summary
- US restarts visa processing for foreign doctors.
- Foreign physicians are vital to underserved areas.
- US faces a worsening doctor shortage.

The United States has reversed a policy that had previously halted immigration processing for foreign doctors. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has updated its website to confirm that physicians will no longer be subject to the processing freeze that was linked to broader travel restrictions enacted earlier this year. These restrictions had paused decisions on visa extensions and work permits for nationals from 39 countries.
This policy adjustment is critical as the U.S. faces a substantial and worsening physician shortage. Projections indicate a deficit of up to 86,000 doctors by 2036. Foreign-trained physicians constitute a significant portion of the medical workforce, with 23 percent of licensed doctors educated abroad. Notably, 64 percent of these international physicians practice in underserved areas, serving nearly 21 million Americans in regions with doctor shortages.
