The United States has reported over 2,000 cases of measles as of December 23, 2025, a threshold not crossed in more than 30 years. This significant resurgence is primarily fueled by 50 distinct outbreaks across the nation, comprising 87% of the total confirmed infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data indicates a strong correlation between the outbreaks and unvaccinated populations.
Measles, a highly contagious illness that was eliminated in the U.S. by the year 2000, has reappeared, predominantly affecting individuals without vaccinations. In 2025, a striking 93% of reported measles cases were found among the unvaccinated or those with an unknown vaccination history. The MMR vaccine offers substantial protection with a 97% efficacy rate, typically administered in childhood.
While measles is often manageable, it can lead to severe complications, including lung and brain infections, potentially causing deafness, cognitive issues, or even death. This year saw three confirmed fatalities. International travel also contributed, with 24 cases linked to visitors. Infections were reported in at least 43 states, highlighting the widespread nature of the current public health challenge.
