8 Oct
Summary
- 73 food establishment licenses were suspended due to hygiene and sanitation violations.
- Inspections found expired products, pests, and poor sanitation in many establishments.
- Over 56 licenses were restored after establishments rectified deficiencies.
In Uttar Pradesh, 73 food establishments have had their licenses suspended by the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) following a campaign that began on September 17. The "Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai" initiative involved inspections of 253 food businesses, revealing widespread issues such as expired products, evidence of pests like rats and cockroaches, and severely deficient hygiene and sanitation. Many establishments also lacked proper pest control and drainage systems.
Establishments with correctable issues received improvement notices. However, those posing serious food safety risks faced license suspension and operational shutdowns. The FSDA has since restored 56 licenses after verifying that businesses have rectified deficiencies related to kitchen hygiene, food storage, pest control, sanitation, and food handling. Suspended businesses can seek restoration by submitting evidence of compliance, which is then physically re-inspected.
