Gynaecologists at VN Desai Hospital in Mumbai have reported a concerning rise in severe complications among women who took abortion pills without medical supervision. Over the past two months, 12 such cases were admitted, prompting the hospital to alert the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA has initiated an investigation into pharmacies, particularly in areas where the affected patients reside, to address potential illegal over-the-counter sales of medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) pills. Hospital staff noted that some patients experienced severe infections.
While safe abortion access is a right, bypassing medical supervision poses significant risks. Data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 indicated that a high percentage of abortions in Maharashtra are conducted under doctor's care. The hospital is working to understand how these pills were obtained without prescriptions, with varying accounts from patients.
No deaths have been reported among the affected women. The issue underscores the importance of professional medical guidance during abortion procedures.
