Unapproved stem cell treatments for autism are rapidly expanding across the United States, raising serious concerns among scientists and medical professionals. Meanwhile, a new "clinical trial" is scheduled to commence in Tijuana, Mexico, on July 15, targeting 120 children with autism. This experiment, operating under Mexican oversight, aims to assess the safety and efficacy of umbilical stem cells, with ambitions to expand to US sites if successful.

Despite assurances from some providers about safety and reported anecdotal improvements, numerous experts emphasize the lack of robust scientific backing for these treatments in autism. Studies, including those by Duke University, have shown mixed or inconclusive results, failing to support the widespread use of stem cells for autism outside of formal trials. Concerns persist about financial exploitation and the potential diversion of families from evidence-based interventions.
