Unapproved Drug Marketed by Clinics
8 Jun
Summary
- Experimental weight-loss drug retatrutide is sold online.
- Dozens of clinics openly advertise the unapproved drug.
- Some clinics defend prescribing it based on trial results.

An experimental weight-loss drug, retatrutide, is being widely sold online and promoted by clinics across the United States, bypassing the standard FDA approval process. This phenomenon is occurring despite the drug not being authorized for market by the Food and Drug Administration. Investigators identified over 120 websites offering retatrutide, with more than 50 clinics staffed by licensed medical professionals openly advertising its availability. These clinics, some offering discounts and praising its efficacy, are defying a long-standing medical norm of waiting for FDA approval before prescribing new medications.
Practitioners at some of these clinics have expressed confidence in the drug's results based on clinical trials sponsored by Eli Lilly. However, after CBS News began its investigation, at least 21 clinics removed retatrutide from their online offerings or modified their language. This unregulated market for an unapproved drug highlights a significant concern regarding patient safety and the legal pathways for prescription medications.
