Public Ignorant of Ultra-Processed Foods' Health Risks
16 Apr
Summary
- Most people feel uninformed about health impacts of ultra-processed foods.
- UK consumers are concerned about UPFs affecting pregnancy and child development.
- Consumers distrust industry claims and want public researchers to lead.

Widespread public concern exists regarding the health implications of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), yet many feel ill-informed about their potential impacts. A recent UK-backed study revealed anxieties about UPFs affecting critical areas such as pregnancy, child development, mental health, obesity, and cancer. While research links UPFs to poorer health outcomes, the exact extent of this effect and the specific culprits—processing methods or high fat, sugar, and salt content—remain debated.
Participants in the study, which included in-depth discussions with 132 members of the public, voiced strong desires for immediate action, particularly concerning child health and non-communicable diseases. They expressed distrust in food industry marketing, describing it as deceptive, and placed greater faith in publicly funded researchers. The demand is for a shift in power from corporations to government and the public, guided by scientific evidence, to address the pervasive nature of UPFs in the UK diet.
