A patient in the UK has successfully received a novel treatment for a severe arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in his brain. Zehair Ayub, from Bradford, was diagnosed with the condition in 2011, which presented as an abnormal tangle of blood vessels causing a dangerous aneurysm.
This aneurysm was pressing on his visual nerves, severely impacting his sight and overall coordination. After struggling with the condition for 15 years and exhausting all treatment options, Ayub decided to try the new therapy.
Between September 2025 and May 2026, Ayub underwent four rounds of the ihtObtura treatment. This innovative therapy, administered by Dr. Fathallah Islim, involves injecting a special liquid into the affected blood vessels to close them off.
The ihtObtura treatment is often reserved for AVMs that are otherwise untreatable due to high risks. Dr. Islim noted the groundbreaking success in Ayub's case, highlighting the material's role in curing the AVM and restoring Ayub's life.
