Sleep Data to Track Flu Outbreaks
30 Jan
Summary
- Sleep tracking app data to monitor respiratory illnesses.
- UK Health Security Agency is leading the 12-week research program.
- Study aims to provide earlier signals of rising infection rates.

A new 12-week research program is underway in the UK, aiming to leverage sleep data for public health surveillance. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is collaborating with the sleep tracking app Sleep Cycle to analyze anonymized user data. This study will examine sleep patterns, specifically nighttime cough trends, collected between January 2023 and January 2024.
The primary objective is to determine if these sleep-based signals can provide earlier indications of escalating respiratory infections, such as flu, RSV, and COVID-19. By comparing this data with existing hospital admission records and surveillance indicators, the UKHSA hopes to enhance its early warning systems for potential outbreaks.
This initiative marks a significant step in integrating unconventional data sources into national health intelligence. Officials believe that transforming passive sleep monitoring into a diagnostic tool could contribute to proactive, data-driven healthcare and potentially save lives on a large scale.
