NHS Overlooks Millions of Older Britons' Sex Needs
10 Feb
Summary
- 59% of over-50s find healthy sex life important in aging.
- 19% believe doctors dismiss their sexual health concerns.
- 3.9 million over-50s worry about their sexual health.

New research indicates that the National Health Service (NHS) is failing to adequately address the sexual health needs of millions of middle-aged and elderly Britons. A significant majority, 59%, of individuals over 50 consider an active sex life crucial for their relationships as they age. However, a concerning 19% of this age group report that doctors and healthcare workers do not take their sexual health concerns seriously.
Compounding this issue, 24% of older adults desire more information and resources regarding sex in later life. Age UK has responded by releasing its first comprehensive guide on sex, relationships, and intimacy for older adults, noting a substantial lack of tailored advice. The charity suggests that societal stigma surrounding aging and sexuality may prevent older individuals from seeking necessary help, potentially impacting their physical and mental health.
Data reveals that 3.9 million individuals over 50 are concerned about their sexual health and well-being. Furthermore, half of this age group feel that brands and advertisers overlook their sexual needs, and 15% are too embarrassed to seek an STI test due to stigma. This underscores a critical need for open discussion and accessible support for older adults.
