13 Apr
Summary

- Changes are set to be implemented starting September 2027.

Schools across the nation are set to implement a comprehensive overhaul of their menus, marking the most substantial changes to school food standards since 2014. These new regulations aim to combat rising rates of childhood obesity and tooth decay, with approximately one in three children leaving primary school overweight or obese.
Effective from September 2027, deep-fried foods will be completely eliminated from school offerings. Sugary desserts will be limited to once per week, requiring at least 50% fruit content. While initial plans propose a phased approach for secondary schools, reducing sweet treats to one portion weekly by September 2028.
Additionally, unhealthy 'grab and go' snacks like sausage rolls and pizza will be phased out. The focus will shift to main meals, ensuring each is accompanied by vegetables or salad. Sides cooked in fat or oil, such as chips, will be allowed a maximum of twice a week. These changes apply to all school breakfasts and lunches.
