5 Aug
Summary
- Patient appealed for more UK clinical trials for brain cancer.
- Prime Minister agreed to meet with the patient.
- Rare Cancers Bill aims to boost UK research and investment.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham will meet with brain cancer patient Archie Goodburn following a public appeal for enhanced clinical trial availability in the UK. Goodburn, diagnosed with oligodendroglioma at age 22, urged the Prime Minister to "give us a chance to fight for our lives" and establish more research opportunities, citing the US, Australia, and China as leaders in the field.
The Rare Cancers Bill, which recently became law, is designed to stimulate research and investment into rare and less survivable cancers in the UK. This legislation targets conditions affecting fewer than 1 in 2,000 people.
Currently, Servier Pharmaceuticals' Voranigo is the sole drug approved in the UK for specific cases of grade 2 oligodendroglioma. Traditional treatments include chemotherapy regimens like PCV and temozolomide. Out of 77 planned and ongoing global clinical trials for oligodendroglioma, only six are situated in the UK.
