A liver transplant has given young Ollie a new lease on life, with his family expressing immense gratitude to the donor's family. Miriam, the donor, tragically passed away suddenly, but her family, amidst their grief, chose organ donation, allowing Miriam's liver to save Ollie.

This act of generosity underscores the vital importance of organ donation, especially as the UK grapples with a significant decline in deceased organ donation rates. Since April, donation rates have fallen 9% below last year's figures, contributing to a transplant waiting list now exceeding 8,700 individuals.

NHS Blood and Transplant has launched an urgent response plan to address the crisis. With only a small percentage of deaths occurring in circumstances suitable for donation, and eligible donor numbers reduced, efforts are focused on identifying more potential donors and improving testing protocols.

Health chiefs are appealing to the public for support, aiming to add one million new sign-ups to the NHS Organ Donor Register by year's end. Despite England's opt-out system, family consent remains crucial, as over 700 potential donations were lost between April 2021 and March 2026 due to families not knowing loved ones' wishes.
