Hearing Loss Epidemic Grips UK, Millions Struggle to Seek Help

As of November 13th, 2025, the UK is facing a growing hearing loss epidemic, with an estimated 20.3 million people affected. According to the recently published UK National Eye Health and Hearing Study, around half of those aged 50 and over experience hearing issues, rising to 80% for those over 70.

However, the majority of those with hearing problems have not sought help. A survey by the UK's hearing loss charity, RNID, found that 38% of people aged over 55 admitted to having hearing issues but had not sought treatment. Many cited feeling that their hearing "wasn't bad enough" to warrant action, while nearly half also mentioned feeling embarrassed.

Experts warn that this reluctance to address hearing loss can have serious consequences. Franki Oliver, the audiology manager at RNID, states that "unaddressed hearing loss can lead to barriers in employment, socialising, and access to everyday services." Furthermore, a study at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine found that even mild hearing loss can double the risk of dementia, with severe hearing problems increasing the likelihood by five times.
