UK Health Agency Warns of Early Flu Surge, Urges Vaccinations

As of November 10, 2025, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has delivered an urgent message to parents of schoolchildren nationwide. The agency is reporting an early and concerning increase in flu cases, with a weekly average positivity rate of 10.9% as of November 4, up from 8.2% the previous week. The rates are highest among those aged 5 to 14 years old.

Health specialists indicate that the flu season has begun unusually early this year, mirroring warning signs from the Asia-Pacific region, where Japan has already declared a flu epidemic. The UKHSA is urging parents to sign the consent forms for their children's free NHS nasal flu vaccine, as this can help protect their child and reduce the risk of passing the virus to vulnerable family members.

Dr. Kostas Karampatsas, a paediatric infectious diseases consultant, emphasized the importance of the flu vaccine, stating, "If your child's school is offering a flu vaccine this winter, please make sure you sign the consent form. It will help protect your child and your loved ones." The UKHSA echoed this sentiment, adding that it is crucial for eligible individuals to book their flu vaccine appointments as soon as possible, as the vaccine is the best defense against the virus.

Experts warn that the early start to the flu season could lead to a 'long and drawn out' winter for the NHS, with many thousands expected to end up in the hospital and far too many deaths from the flu. The agency is urging everyone with flu or COVID-19 symptoms to minimize contact with others, especially those who are vulnerable, and to consider wearing a face covering, washing hands regularly, and ensuring indoor spaces are well-ventilated if they must go out.
