4 Nov
Summary
- British healthcare worker tested positive for Ebola in the DRC.
- The patient is being medically evacuated back to Britain.
- New experimental vaccines and antibody drugs are in trials.

A British healthcare worker in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been diagnosed with Ebola, marking the first such case for a UK national. The individual is currently in stable condition and is being medically evacuated to Britain, expected to arrive between Wednesday and Thursday. This person was deployed to support the Ebola response efforts within the DRC.
Global health organizations are intensifying efforts to combat the ongoing Ebola outbreak, particularly the Bundibugyo strain, which lacks approved medical interventions. Unlike the Zaire strain, specific treatments for Bundibugyo are still under development. The death toll from Ebola has surpassed 5,000, with over 10,000 infections recorded.
Several experimental vaccines are progressing towards clinical trials, including candidates from the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and Oxford University in partnership with the Serum Institute of India. Additionally, antibody drugs from Mapp Biopharmaceutical and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, as well as Gilead Sciences' antiviral drug obeldesivir, are being evaluated as potential treatments.
The World Health Organization has recommended prioritizing these experimental treatments, including vaccines like ChAdOx1 and Moderna's mRNA-1469, for clinical trials in the DRC. Progress is being made in testing, but limited testing capacity for the Bundibugyo strain has previously slowed response efforts.
