Money Woes Drive 34% of UK Drinkers to Moderate
26 Aug
Summary
- 34% of UK drinkers are cutting alcohol to save money.
- Rising prices are a bigger driver than health scares.
- Weekly binge drinking has increased, especially among older adults.

A significant shift in UK drinking habits is underway, with 34% of drinkers now actively moderating their alcohol intake primarily to save money amidst the rising cost of living. New analysis reveals that financial concerns are a stronger influence on reducing alcohol consumption than health scares or hangovers.
While 91% of UK drinkers are making efforts to limit their alcohol intake, there is a concerning counter-trend of increased binge drinking. Weekly binge drinking has risen to 13% of all drinkers, a 2% increase since 2025. This trend is particularly pronounced among individuals aged 55 and over, where monthly binge drinking has risen from 20% to 24%.
The proportion of drinkers adhering to recommended weekly guidelines has also declined for the first time since 2018. Currently, 78% of drinkers are staying within the recommended 14 units per week, down from 82% in 2025. This indicates a potential erosion of previously observed positive trends in national drinking habits.
