UK Considers Playground Smoking Ban for Kids' Health
13 Feb
Summary
- New proposals aim to ban smoking and vaping in children's playgrounds.
- The plan includes restrictions outside schools and health facilities.
- Outdoor hospitality areas and beaches will be exempt from the ban.

The UK government is proposing significant expansions to smoke-free zones, currently under public consultation. These measures aim to protect children and vulnerable individuals from secondhand smoke and vaping.
Under the proposed plan, smoking and vaping would be prohibited in children's playgrounds and outside schools. Smoking will also be banned outside hospitals and other health facilities, though vaping will remain permitted there to support individuals attempting to quit.
Existing indoor public spaces, including workplaces and public transport, will also become heated tobacco-free and vape-free. However, outdoor areas of hospitality venues like pubs and restaurants, as well as wide-open public spaces such as beaches, will be exempt. People will still be able to smoke or vape in their homes or private outdoor spaces.
