UK Kids Lack Sunshine Vitamin: Rickets Risk Rises
28 Jan
Summary
- Nearly one in five UK children have insufficient vitamin D levels.
- Low vitamin D can lead to rickets in children and bone pain in adults.
- Daily supplements are recommended for children aged 1-4 and during winter for others.

Millions of children across the UK are at risk due to low vitamin D levels, with nearly one in five falling short of recommended guidelines. This deficiency, often called the "sunshine vitamin," is critical as vitamin D regulates calcium and phosphate for strong bones and muscles.
Lack of vitamin D can cause rickets in children, characterized by softened bones and symptoms like bowed legs, swollen wrists, and muscle weakness. Adults may suffer from osteomalacia, leading to bone pain. Delayed teeth eruption and shorter stature can also be indicators in youngsters.
To combat this, babies up to one year old should receive daily vitamin D supplements, especially if breastfed or consuming less than 500ml of formula. Children aged one to four also need a daily 10 microgram supplement year-round. While most children and adults can generate sufficient vitamin D from sunlight between late March and September, supplementation is advised for those aged five and older during autumn and winter.
