A nine-year-old boy from Northampton, Alfie Phillips, has made history as the first patient in the UK to undergo a pioneering leg-lengthening surgery. Alfie was born with fibular hemimelia, a rare condition that caused his right leg to develop approximately four centimetres shorter than his left. This difference was projected to increase to six centimetres by the time he reached 16.
Doctors at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool successfully implanted a lengthening nail within Alfie's thigh bone. This internal device was then slowly extended using a magnet three times daily over a month, prompting his body to create new bone tissue to fill the gap. Previously, such procedures were considered too risky for younger children, with external frames being the primary option.
Alfie, who previously found it difficult to participate in activities like skipping due to his leg length, is now recovering remarkably well. His mother noted his rapid progress, with the consultant orthopaedic surgeon describing his pain score dropping to zero within seven days as 'unheard of'. Alfie is now enjoying being taller and has taken up basketball.
