Health Data Breach: UK Biobank Samples Exposed
1 May
Summary
- UK Biobank health data was found for sale on China's Alibaba site.
- No personal identifiers were included in the leaked Biobank data.
- Very few participants withdrew from Biobank after the security incident.

A security breach involving UK Biobank's health data, which was listed for sale on China's Alibaba site, has raised alarms within the research community. Science minister Patrick Vallance noted further attempts to sell the data were expected. Crucially, the leaked information did not contain personal identifiers such as names or NHS numbers, and Chinese authorities swiftly removed the listings. The vast majority of Biobank's 500,000 participants remained with the program, with only about 100 inquiring about withdrawal and 50 ultimately leaving.
Longitudinal studies, like the UK Biobank, are vital for medical advancements. Biobank collected detailed health and lifestyle data from individuals aged 40-69 starting in 2006, including genetic sequencing. This data has already contributed to significant discoveries, such as a blood test for motor neurone disease and identifying a gene linked to Alzheimer's. The incident, attributed to rogue researchers, underscores the tension between making valuable data accessible for legitimate scientific inquiry and ensuring absolute data security, especially with the rise of AI that can potentially re-identify anonymized data.
