Liver injuries reported to U.S. poison centers have seen a dramatic increase of nearly 400% between 2000 and 2024. Researchers analyzed over 220,000 cases, finding that foreign substances, particularly medications, are the main cause. Medications were responsible for 85% of cases in men and 94% in women.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) emerged as a significant contributor to these liver injuries, cited in a substantial percentage of cases. Despite FDA caps on combination products containing acetaminophen, Tylenol alone remains a leading cause. Over 80% of the identified liver injury cases necessitated hospitalization, underscoring the serious health consequences.
