16 Sep
Summary
- Two young brothers died within hours of each other due to a six-day fever.
- Family suspects dengue and blames poor sanitation and waterlogging for mosquito breeding.
- Health officials ordered a death audit, stating dengue was not confirmed.
In Sikandrabad, two young brothers, aged seven and five, died within hours of each other after suffering from a fever for six days. Their family members reported that the boys' condition rapidly deteriorated on Tuesday evening as their platelet counts dropped significantly. One brother passed away around midnight while receiving treatment in Meerut, and the second died early Wednesday morning.
Family members suspect dengue, attributing the illness to the persistent waterlogging and inadequate sanitation in their Khatriwada neighborhood, which they believe is fostering mosquito breeding. Their father, Rohit Kumar, a daily-wage worker, highlighted the issue of clogged drains and stagnant water, expressing concern over the lack of basic sanitation in the area.
Chief Medical Officer Sunil Dohare confirmed that the deaths have not been officially confirmed as dengue cases. He stated that a death audit is underway to ascertain the precise cause, emphasizing that a drop in platelet count alone is not conclusive evidence of dengue. Medical records and other potential causes are currently under examination. The incidents have raised concerns among local residents, with several families reporting similar symptoms in recent days.
