Twins Rise from Poverty to Lead ER
26 Sep
Summary
- Identical twins grew up in extreme poverty without running water.
- A negative hospital experience inspired their medical career vow.
- They returned to their community as ER co-directors.

Drs. Travan and Travis Jasper, identical twins, now lead the emergency department at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Their journey began in severe poverty, where they lacked basic necessities like running water and often faced hunger. This challenging upbringing instilled in them a powerful drive for success, viewing education as their only escape.
A pivotal moment occurred when they were 12. Visiting their hospitalized, alcoholic uncle, they were dismayed by a doctor's dismissive attitude. This encounter sparked a vow between the twins to offer more compassionate care than they witnessed.
Motivated by this promise and each other, they achieved co-valedictorian status in high school, pursued undergraduate studies at Stanford, and earned medical degrees from the University of Chicago. In April, they returned to their childhood community as co-directors of the ER, fulfilling the vow made 40 years prior.
To distinguish themselves at work, they wear different colored scrubs. Their remarkable ascent from hardship to healing highlights their resilience and commitment to making a difference.
