Summary
- Millions of tulips bloom on 20 acres to support a hospice.
- The annual event aims to raise £500,000 for vital hospice services.
- Hospice funding relies heavily on events like this for operations.

A stunning display of 9.1 million tulips, covering 20 acres, has officially opened its gates to the public. This annual event, known as 'Tulips for Tapping,' is a vital fundraiser for Tapping House hospice, with a goal of raising £500,000. The hospice, which provides free care for adults with life-limiting illnesses and supports their carers, warns that without such funding, services and staff numbers may need to be reduced.
Niki Ellis, the chief executive of Tapping House, highlighted the increasing financial pressures on the hospice sector. She explained that NHS funding now covers only about 22% of their operational costs, necessitating income generation through events like the tulip display. The showstopping floral exhibition, which previously served as a backdrop for the film 'Wicked,' is the charity's primary source of income.
Mark Eves, director of Belmont Nurseries where the tulips are grown, expressed pride in the collaboration. Following the display, which concludes on Monday, April 27, 2026, the tulip heads will be removed to promote bulb energy. The bulbs will be harvested in July for grading, sorting, and potential resale or future flower production.
