A trip to India for a wedding resulted in a devastating health crisis for Andrew Wasil, 39, of Braintree, Massachusetts. What began as a joyous occasion quickly turned dire when a seemingly minor symptom escalated into a life-threatening condition.
Within days of dismissing initial discomfort as a pulled muscle, Wasil experienced severe breathing difficulties. He was rushed to a Mumbai hospital where doctors diagnosed a dangerous strep infection leading to septic shock. His condition deteriorated rapidly, necessitating placement on a ventilator and eventually the amputation of both legs below the knee to save his life.
Following over six weeks in intensive care in India, a remarkable community effort emerged. More than $221,000 was raised through GoFundMe to facilitate an air ambulance transfer back to Boston for continued medical care. He returned to the U.S. in late April, but tragically passed away on June 19, less than two months after his return, surrounded by his family.
