22 Sep
Summary
- Mushrooms sold at Harrop community hall may be toxic.
- Brown roll-rim mushrooms can cause severe health effects.
- Health authority urges immediate disposal of purchased mushrooms.
Interior Health issued a critical alert on September 20th, warning the public about potentially toxic mushrooms sold at the Harrop community hall, located near Nelson. The B.C. Drug and Poison Information Centre reviewed the mushrooms and determined they could be harmful.
These mushrooms have been tentatively identified as Paxillus involutus, commonly known as brown roll-rims, which can cause severe health effects. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dark-colored urine can appear within two hours of consumption. Anyone who has eaten these mushrooms or develops symptoms is urged to seek immediate medical attention or contact the B.C. Drug and Poison Information Centre.
The health authority is actively working to contact individuals who may have purchased these mushrooms and advises anyone who bought them on September 20th to dispose of them. The sale of wild mushrooms in Canada is an unregulated industry, highlighting the need for caution when purchasing from unverified sources.
