- Clinic offers temporary care and connects patients long-term.
- Provincial funding aims to connect all Ontarians to primary care by 2029.
A new clinic has opened at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto's east end, specifically designed to help thousands of patients find much-needed family doctors. Launched on October 27th, the East Toronto Primary Care Navigation Clinic aims to provide immediate primary care and eventually connect individuals with permanent doctors in their community.
The clinic offers a temporary solution, bridging the gap for patients who may otherwise resort to emergency departments for non-urgent needs. Staffed by a family doctor, nurses, and a navigation counsellor, the clinic provides short-term follow-up appointments, typically two to six visits. During these sessions, medical needs are stabilized, and efforts are made to link patients with community support and long-term primary care providers.
This initiative is supported by provincial funding, aligning with a broader goal to connect every Ontarian with a primary care provider by 2029. The hospital is collaborating with community partners to offer a holistic approach, recognizing the diverse needs of the local population, including newcomers and seniors, by providing "social prescriptions" for housing and food assistance.
