A one-year-nine-month-old child has been successfully treated for life-threatening brain and lung injuries sustained in a road accident. The child required extensive pediatric critical care and rehabilitation for nearly a month. Initially admitted with severe traumatic brain injuries and aspiration-related lung injury, the situation was complicated by a multidrug-resistant bloodstream infection and pneumonia.
Navigating prolonged ventilator support posed a significant challenge, balancing the risks of further infection against the need for breathing assistance. Doctors meticulously managed extubation attempts, employing neurological assessments and breathing trials. Treatment included lung-protective ventilation, bronchoscopies, targeted antibiotics, and gradual transitions to non-invasive respiratory support.
Alongside respiratory management, a multidisciplinary rehabilitation plan was implemented. This involved specialists focusing on physiotherapy, tube feeding until swallowing reflexes returned, and neuro-rehabilitation to restore motor functions. After approximately 30 days in intensive care, the child was discharged, breathing independently and showing significant progress in motor skills.
