- A 16-month-old boy died suddenly on New Year's Day.
- Post-mortem examination revealed signs of Streptococcus A in his blood.
- His parents raised over £10,000 for a children's charity.

A Sheffield couple, Anya and Hugo Sousa, are sharing their tragic story after their 16-month-old son, Leonardo, died in his sleep on New Year's Day. The parents described the event as their "worst nightmare" after Leo, who had displayed only mild cold-like symptoms in the preceding days, was found unresponsive.
Following the devastating loss, a post-mortem examination conducted in May 2024 revealed the presence of Streptococcus A in Leo's blood. Although Strep A often presents with mild symptoms, it can sometimes lead to more severe complications, as tragically experienced by the Sousa family.
In the wake of their son's death, Anya and Hugo have dedicated themselves to supporting others. They successfully raised over £10,000 for the charity Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC UK) by completing a 50km Ultra Challenge Walk in the Peak District on July 4, 2026, aiming to increase awareness and funding for research.
