Toddler Loses Sight After Hospital Error in Sagar

A 19-month-old child has allegedly lost his eyesight permanently after receiving treatment at Banda Civil Hospital in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. The child's father brought him to the hospital on May 29, 2026, for symptoms of cold, cough, and eye redness. According to the family, a pediatrician on duty prescribed several medications, including eye drops. However, they claim a medicine intended for phlegm was mistakenly put into the child's eyes.

The child's condition worsened significantly while at the hospital. He was then referred to the district hospital and subsequently to AIIMS Bhopal, where doctors confirmed the permanent vision loss, attributing it to alleged wrong medication or negligence. The father has filed a complaint, demanding strict action against those responsible.

In response to the incident, the Sagar Chief Medical and Health Officer has formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The committee is tasked with determining the exact sequence of events, including the prescribed and administered medicines, and identifying any negligence. The police are also conducting a separate investigation. This case follows another recent allegation of medical negligence in Sagar.
