30 May
Summary
- Consultation held on safeguarding public health policies.
- Tobacco use linked to nearly 40% of cancer cases.
- Annual awareness campaigns target youth and users.

Ahead of World No Tobacco Day, a significant state-level consultation was convened to address Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The meeting, organized by the Cancer Institute (WIA) and supported by the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Government of Tamil Nadu, aimed to bolster tobacco control strategies.
The core focus was on reinforcing collaborative, multi-sectoral efforts to protect public health policies from the pervasive influence of the tobacco industry. This initiative aligns with the global theme for World No Tobacco Day, which seeks to expose the tactics employed by the tobacco and nicotine product industries.
Participants included key figures from public health and dental associations, highlighting the collective concern over tobacco's impact. Tobacco is a primary driver of preventable cancer and premature mortality in India, contributing to over 1.35 million deaths annually, and is linked to nearly 40% of all cancer cases.
In parallel, the institute is launching a series of public awareness initiatives. These include awareness campaigns, an anti-tobacco rally, and the distribution of informational materials, with a particular focus on engaging youth and current tobacco users.
