Tamil Nadu's Health Initiative Reaches Margins
27 Jan
Summary
- Initiative improves NCD care access for marginalized populations.
- Screening over 80% for diabetes and hypertension.
- Study calls for improved cancer screening and urban reach.

A recent study highlights the success of Tamil Nadu's 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam' (MTM) initiative in improving healthcare access for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly among women and marginalized communities.
The MTM program has achieved broad reach, with over 80% of surveyed individuals aged 30 and above screened for diabetes and hypertension. Field staff delivered the majority of these services, demonstrating the initiative's effectiveness in doorstep care delivery.
While treatment uptake for diagnosed NCDs is high, the study identified gaps in effective disease control, especially for diabetes. It also pointed to lower cancer screening rates and challenges in extending the program's reach to urban populations.
