Tennessee Fights Back Against Cancer Crisis

Researchers, clinicians, and policymakers convened recently in Nashville to establish a robust, unified cancer strategy for Tennessee. This effort aims to address the state's high cancer mortality rates, which place it sixth nationally. The conference highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration and research infrastructure to secure vital state and federal funding.

Cancer imposes a significant burden on Tennessee, resulting in substantial medical expenses and lost productivity. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is at the forefront, conducting innovative studies and fostering partnerships across the state to develop new diagnostic tools and treatments. This includes promising research into chemotherapy resistance and advanced prostate cancer.

To bolster these efforts, six Cancer Discovery Research Grants were awarded to UT System researchers, funded by the university's new Cancer Discovery Fund. These grants support pioneering research with the potential to improve cancer survival rates and reduce patient suffering. The collective strength of Tennessee's research network is building a foundation for a comprehensive approach to conquering cancer.
