Veterinarians at the Multi-Speciality Veterinary Hospital (MSVH) in Kudappanakunnu have successfully completed a complex congenital corrective surgery on a very small Shih Tzu puppy. The two-month-old patient weighed only 900 grams, making it one of the smallest animals to undergo such a delicate procedure. The puppy was diagnosed with Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA), a congenital anomaly where abnormal blood vessels compress the esophagus, hindering normal swallowing and potentially leading to severe complications.
The delicate operation presented considerable surgical and anesthetic hurdles because of the puppy's diminutive size. Dr. T.N. Jayakrishnan, Assistant Director at MSVH, guided the case, noting the rarity of diagnosis and the significant challenge posed by the puppy's weight. Corrective treatment involved thoracic surgery to release the vascular ring constricting the esophagus. The medical team emphasized the crucial support from MSVH Deputy Director L. Sophia, which ensured the necessary resources and cooperation for this advanced procedure. The puppy is reportedly doing well following the surgery.
