A 14-year-old British schoolgirl, Adriana Retyte, died after viewing "high-risk" suicide content on TikTok, prompting renewed demands for UK regulators to address "toxic" social media feeds. The Norfolk area coroner stated that Retyte's access to such material "may have played a significant part" in her decision to end her life. Her devices revealed she had viewed numerous suicide-related videos and images in the week prior to her death in May 2026.
TikTok expressed its deepest sympathies and stated it enforces strict rules against self-harm promotion, utilizing advanced technologies for content removal. However, it's understood the platform had not yet investigated Retyte's specific account. This case follows a similar tragedy nine years ago involving Molly Russell, who died after exposure to self-harm content on other social media platforms.
The chief executive of Ofcom, Melanie Dawes, voiced concerns to MPs about the lack of a safety culture in social media companies, noting their slow response to risks like child grooming and algorithmic promotion of harmful material. Ofcom launched a separate investigation in June 2026 into TikTok's compliance with child protection obligations. The Molly Rose Foundation advocates for an immediate investigation into TikTok's algorithm, citing a survey where one in three teens saw high-risk content.
