- Schools also benefit from therapy dogs, improving student engagement and confidence.
Therapy dogs are revolutionizing healthcare experiences for children, especially those with autism, who often face severe anxiety during hospital visits. Mia, a four-and-a-half-year-old Labradoodle trained by Assistance Dogs Northern Ireland (ADNI), exemplifies this impact. Mia's presence at Altnagelvin Hospital in County Londonderry has calmed young patients like Clodagh, turning dreaded appointments into positive experiences. ADNI, which provides specialized autism and disability dogs across Northern Ireland, has seen a growing demand for its services.
Beyond healthcare, ADNI's trained dogs are also integrated into schools. Tally, a recent addition at Edenderry Primary School in County Armagh, helps improve students' confidence, social interaction, and engagement with learning. The training for these remarkable animals is extensive, involving a year of classes from a young age. ADNI, currently operating with 34 trained dogs and six more in training, highlights the substantial investment required for their program, emphasizing the need for greater funding to offer their services at no cost to families.
