Nipah Virus Alert: Thailand Imposes Strict India Flight Checks

Thailand has initiated comprehensive screening for all flights originating from India's West Bengal, identified as a high-risk area for the Nipah virus. These measures commenced at 00:00 local time on Monday, January 26, 2026, with the intention of preventing the virus's entry into the country. The Civil Aviation Authority stated that screening protocols will be adapted as the situation evolves.

Pre-departure health checks by airlines are a key component of the current strategy. Passengers showing symptoms require medical certificates before boarding and must follow health guidelines during their flight. Upon landing in Thailand, all travelers will be subjected to temperature checks and complete a health declaration form. Dedicated screening stations are operational at designated airports.

The Nipah virus, a zoonotic disease with a mortality rate exceeding 40 percent, primarily affects the lungs and brain, causing symptoms like fever, headache, and confusion. It can transmit from animals to humans or through contaminated food and direct contact between people. Although Thailand has not reported any Nipah virus cases, the country is taking proactive measures due to the virus's potential severity and history of outbreaks in Asia since its first recognition in Malaysia in 1999.
