Telangana Hospitals: Cancer Care Closer to Home
7 Apr
Summary
- Cancer care and dialysis services are expanding to district hospitals.
- New ambulances aim to reduce emergency response times significantly.
- Diagnostic and medicine supply networks are being strengthened across districts.

Telangana is undertaking a significant healthcare reform, shifting vital services such as chemotherapy, dialysis, and NCD management from Hyderabad to district-level hospitals. This strategic move, coinciding with World Health Day on April 7, 2026, aims to enhance patient access, decrease travel burdens, and build a robust public health infrastructure capable of managing both chronic and emergency conditions.
The decentralization of cancer care is a cornerstone of this initiative. With approximately 60,000 new cancer cases diagnosed annually in Telangana, day-care centers have been established in every district headquarters, enabling local chemotherapy treatments. Plans are also underway to establish four regional cancer care centers to bolster screening and treatment capabilities.
Dialysis services have seen substantial expansion over the past two years, with 16 new centers and 120 additional beds increasing the total to 102 centers. Emergency care is also being prioritized; 213 new ambulances have been deployed, with each mandal receiving one, reducing response times in tribal and rural areas. An additional 77 ambulances are slated for addition as the state targets a 10-minute response benchmark.
Further enhancing healthcare accessibility, the government plans to establish 109 trauma care centers along major highways. Specialized services are also being introduced, including Maitri Clinics for the transgender community and geriatric clinics for the elderly. The T-Diagnostics network has expanded its testing capabilities to 134 tests across all 33 districts, offering radiology services free of charge. To ensure medication availability, 22 new Central Medicinal Stores have been established, one in each district.
