30 Mar
Summary
- Telangana considers a new food safety authority like EAGLE and HYDRAA.
- Widespread food adulteration now affects many sectors beyond hotels.
- Spurious spices, synthetic milk, and adulterated oil seized in raids.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has voiced serious concerns regarding the pervasive issue of food adulteration within Telangana. He indicated that the state government is contemplating the creation of a specialized monitoring and enforcement body, drawing inspiration from existing agencies like EAGLE and HYDRAA.
Recent weeks have seen extensive food safety operations across Telangana, uncovering large-scale adulteration. Authorities have confiscated a variety of compromised products, including spurious spices, artificially ripened fruits, and cooking oil mixed with industrial substitutes. The contamination extends to packaged foods and everyday consumables, presenting a significant public health challenge.
CM Reddy highlighted that food adulteration is no longer limited to restaurants but has infiltrated numerous sectors, leading to public anxiety and a demand for safer food options. He warned that the consumption of such substandard food could lead to long-term health consequences and an increase in unexplained illnesses.
The envisioned authority would possess targeted enforcement powers, similar to those of EAGLE in drug law enforcement and HYDRAA in environmental protection. This initiative aims to bolster regulatory oversight and ensure the safety and quality of food reaching consumers, addressing growing public fears about contaminated food products.
