Teen Suffered Cruel Mockery Before Death
18 Jul
Summary
- Teenager endured cruel treatment and trauma, inquest found.
- Hospital staff mocked patient during mental health crisis.
- Inquest highlighted failings from start to end of care.

An inquest jury determined that the "treatment and trauma" experienced by Emily Moore, 18, throughout her dealings with mental health services were contributing factors to her death in February 2020. Moore had been a patient at the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust's Lanchester Road Hospital. The jury's findings highlighted significant failings within the trust's care.
Moore's father described West Lane Hospital as a "chaotic hell-hole," recounting how his daughter was allegedly treated "like dirt," mocked, and left unattended while self-harming. Staff reportedly swore at her and made callous remarks during her crisis. Despite staff raising concerns, problems at the hospital persisted.
Emily had shown improvement after transferring to Ferndene, run by a different trust, where she experienced structure and positive staff relationships. However, upon turning 18 in February 2020, she was moved back into TEWV's adult care, a transition her father and experts believe should have been more gradual. She died just seven days after being admitted to Lanchester Road Hospital, having fatally injured herself.
