Teen's Death Exposes Mental Health System Failures
2 Feb
Summary
- Teen placed in inappropriate ward due to bed shortage.
- Poor communication between agencies significantly contributed.
- Family calls for increased mental health funding urgently.

A recent inquest has revealed that critical issues within the mental health system contributed to the death of 16-year-old Ellame Ford-Dunn in March 2022. Ellame had a history of self-harm and was placed on Worthing hospital's Bluefin ward, an acute children's unit not specialized for mental health care, due to a lack of appropriate beds.
The jury concluded that placing Ellame in this ward was inappropriate and a factor in her death. They also cited the inadequate provision of mental health beds as a contributing cause. The coroner plans to issue a report warning of further child deaths if this provision gap is not addressed.
