A concerning trend has emerged in Scotland, with a charity reporting that people as young as 15 have sought assistance for unsatisfactory Botox and filler treatments. Advice Direct Scotland (ADS) has been inundated with hundreds of complaints each year, documenting significant financial losses totaling £192,000 over the past two years. The charity is advocating for stricter regulations within the cosmetic procedures industry.
Examining 50 cases, ADS found that nearly half reported physical harm or adverse effects, with some requiring medical intervention. One instance involved a young person being upsold facial fillers, resulting in severe swelling and fluid pooling, with limited options for redress after paying £725 for the unsatisfactory procedure.
In response, the Scottish Government has proposed legislation to restrict non-surgical treatments to individuals aged 18 and over. ADS supports this move and urges for the Non-surgical Procedures and Functions of Medical Reviewers (Scotland) Bill to be strengthened to enhance consumer protection, including requirements for published inspection reports and enforcement actions.
